After an arduous climb pushing our bikes loaded with camping gear up a surprisingly steep gravel road in the hot June sun, the four of us took a much-needed break leaning against a logging company’s Caterpillar excavator parked for the weekend. Once we’d started pedaling about four hours earlier, the beginning of our bikepacking trip had gone surprisingly smoothly, even including a section of unexpectedly paved road.
